Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) arrives in the Northeast on Sunday, August 15, to debate the situation and the direction of Brazil with political and social leaders from six states. Lula will pass through Pernambuco, Piauí, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia. The agenda includes meetings with governors, social movements, unions and regional leaders.

Because of the pandemic Lula will not hold any mass public acts in any of the states.

The last time Lula visited the northeastern Brazilian states was in 2019.

The Northeast region has been the most mistreated by the Bolsonaro government, the effects of the pandemic and abandonment have been cruelly adding to the economic crisis, with the loss of income, the rise in fuel, cooking gas, energy, unemployment and uncontrolled inflation.

The situation in the Northeast is so critical that a survey carried out by the Superintendency for the Development of the Northeast (Sudene) published earlier this month, shows that the direct impact of Covid-19 affected the income of 59% of people in the Northeast. Residents of Piauí (79%) and Ceará (65%) lost the most income.
